Have you heard people from older generations saying things like "back in the good old days we knew the people who we buy from and they knew us, not like the impersonal supermarkets nowadays"? Well, if you look you can still find such personal service - I'm lucky to have found one.
It was by accident actually. We had to find a family GP at the end of 2008 due to the pending arrival of The Little Guy, and the GP that was recommended to us is on the same street as a butcher. I wandered in one day after an appointment and was delighted to find a friendly face.
Riverview Gourmet Meats became our family butcher and I got to know the guys there. They are all knowledgeable and helpful, and always welcomed me with a smile. Here's a picture of the guys (from left to right - Luke, Adam, Shane and Mitchell).
And the quality of the meat is fantastic. There is a big variety on offer, the produce are always fresh because they have high turnover, and there are many marinaded options for days when I have little time to cook.
I highly recommend:
* Moroccan lamb roast - we had it for Christmas lunch and everyone raved about it.
* Pork cutlets - so tender and flavoursome.
* Sausages - there are many varieties available. There is a duck one that is super yummy.
* T-bone steak - just season with salt and pepper, rub with olive oil and put them on the grill pan. Easy and oh so tasty.
I can go on and on, you get the idea! Have a look at the display.
It is more expensive than meat from supermarkets but you can definitely taste the difference. Once we ran out of meat and I had to buy some from Coles and the dish suffered as a result.
So if you live around Lane Cove, go and pay the guys a visit. And if you live elsewhere, do a bit of exploring in your local area and you may find a gem too.
